Pre-Producion and Project Planning
For the project, I am focusing on men's mental health and the stigma that it still, in this modern society unacceptably holds. I have chosen to solely focus on this area as I see this as a substantial issue that needs to be spoken out loud about. Society still maintains the stereotypes around men's mental health and that they should be 'masculine' and not cry, be strong, but why should this be, surely if equal rights are so strongly sought why do we not endorse men speaking up about their internal conflict. So, therefore, I am orientating my project around gender and disability.
I have chosen to create a feature spread as I feel expressing men's mental health through a magazine will encourage men specifically to engage and to break the stigma surrounding their health issues. The designated target audience for this feature spread will specifically be men as they are the main subject matter in this project. I will try to use my own photography also in this magazine, depending on whether I can find a subject willing to be photographed on their mental illness. In order to do this, I will need to fill out a health and safety form and ethics form, thus defining their illness and having their full consent on using the imagery and quotes in my project piece.
The planning process of the project will consist of initial storyboards, therefore planning the layout and the aesthetics of the spread to explore and experiment which will develop the best overall appearance. In addition to this, I will also plan out the text within the article and carefully map out where this will be placed in conjunction with the imagery.
For my textual analysis, I have chosen to explore the way disability is negatively approached and treated in the 2019 film, Joker. Although I feel mental health in recent years has been greatly acknowledged by the mass, I do feel the people who suffer from a mental health condition could be approached and treated with much more respect. Upon watching the Joker film I found many problems with mental health, this being the way he was treated throughout the entirety of the film. I want to explore these issues and tackle them discovering the reasons why people do not understand mental health issues. To plan my textual analysis I will watch the Joker again and gather quotes and key scenes that clearly negatively represent the way his mental illness is treated from the society around him.
