1. The Media and Me

I conducted a log over 48 hours to discover my media consumption. Through this, I found that I used a significant amount of social media, typical of the adolescent generation.

Different types of media are very important to me as I use them for different reasons. The three main media types I use are Print media, Broadcast media and internet, I use each of these for different reasons. A type of print media I use are books, this is for diversion, learning, and entertainment, this depending entirely on the genre, however, the book I read in my log Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was used as a form of entertainment as this is my favourite book.

Broadcast media is another type of media I like to utilise, this being TV, there are numerous individual reasons why I watch TV, these being a diversion, entertainment, personal relationships, personal identification, and integration and social interaction, this again depending on the genre of the show/series.

The main type of media I use highly is the Internet, as a generation of technically competent people, we exploit the use of media for either communication, entertainment and/or learning. The main social media types I use as discovered through the log is 'Instagram' and Snapchat as these, personally to me aid in integration and social interaction as well as a form of entertainment, depending on the reason of usage. An additional social media I use is Pinterest, however, I use this as a source of entertainment and diversion, usually for creating art. A form of the Internet I use significantly is E-mail, this for checking for important situations for example university, I, therefore, use this for surveillance and information. To watch a series or programme I tend to use online services, for instance, Netflix and YouTube as this can be accessed from any device. There are many reasons I consume this form of media, being a diversion, entertainment, integrations, and social interaction and personal identification, these being similar to TV, however, just being internet based instead. A form of media I use very frequently is Spotify, I use this to relax, focus and
entertain. Depending on my mood I will listen to different genres, for instance, if I am reading and I am relaxing I will listen to a calming playlist to help me focus, however, if I am procrastinating I will listen to upbeat music, this is shown through my log on the other observations section.

When conducting my log I took into consideration the times at which I would exclude certain media usage. Throughout the log, I excluded adding data of myself checking my phone for the time, as I felt I would not gain an accurate result due to the extreme amount of times I would check my phone. Relating to this I excluded the times I used my phone for small amounts of time for communication with another person, as I would have had to record a high amount of times.

I timed my media usage to the exact minute to create a more accurate result of my consumption, therefore knowing the exact time I used the specified media. A piece of information I decided to include was the 'purpose of consumption' column in the log, as this would determine the reason for my usage. For example, I used Spotify to consume music, I listened to a calming playlist that would aid me in reading, therefore the reason for my usage was as a diversion. An additional column I added was 'other observations', this is because I wanted to distinguish the reasoning for my media use. As an example, when using Spotify I noted the genre of music I was consuming as this was determined by my mood, so therefore when I listened to 'indie rock' I was in a content state of mind.

Looking back on the media log I have discovered habits, routines and certain tastes that I have. One of the main media platforms I consumed was Spotify I realised that I used this app a significant amount through the day, even if I wasn't conscious of it, it would be playing in the background. I found that I had a routine of waking up in the morning and instantly going on my phone and check social media to see what's happening in the world and with my friends. An unhealthy habit I have obtained is using my phone in bed before sleeping, this distracting me from the purpose of my bed. My media usage was mainly consumed when I was on my own in my bedroom, this is because I find most of my entertainment through a device, for example, Netflix or Snapchat, I still used media with friends just not to the extent I did on my own. Furthermore, I found that with friends I used many different forms of media, for example, Mario Kart Wii a form of Internet media.
